First of all Happy New Year to everyone who reads this blog!!!
Though we ended last year in a seven star performance against Newcastle United, we started the new year in a bit of a scrappy mode. There was a lot of expectation from the Gunners coming from the fact that they scored 6 against Southampton in the previous meeting this year. But an own goal from Southampton came to our rescue to secure atleast one point from the game.
We need to really introspect whether Walcott fits the centre forward role at all. His contribution in the Southampton match was minimal. He was always in the periphery of the game and was not involved much in the match. I really doubt if he is our solution for a new striker and if he is not keen to play on the right flank, does he deserve the 100k a week at this stage. He might in the future.
Wenger has come out and finally said that he will be active in the transfer market this month. I hope it doesn’t mean that he will only be in the market to sell!!! To sell players like Andrei Arshavin, Sebastien Squillaci, Maroune Chamakh, Andre Santos etc. And if he sells Walcott, lets only hope that he buys a good proven substitute player. We need a striker to provide cover for Giroud, a midfielder who will be flexible to play in the flanks and a defender.
Chelsea seems to be closing in on Demba Ba after triggering his release clause. At 7 Mn pounds he will be a steal for any club. And we seem to be making all the right kind of news about Athletico Madrid’s Adrian Lopez. He is 24, can play in the middle as well as the right flank. Looks like we are in pole position to get him in January. If not him, it could be Fernando Llorente of Athletico Bilbao…
Lets wait and watch how Wenger makes his moves.
