Drogba’s finishing and a tight defence – Lessons for Arsenal February 8, 2010

If there was anything that Arsenal has not been the whole season, it was clinical finishing and water tight defending. Both were on display at Stamford Bridge by the team in blue. They capitalised on the mistakes and finished off chances as they came by in the first half and for the rest of the match showed how to defend. Arsenal have had two consecutive defeats in the league, I think after a long time. The only positive I can see after the two defeats is that probably we have finished our quota of defeats for this year and can look forward to easier games ahead, maybe excluding the wednesday night clash against Liverpool.
Before the match started, I was of the opinion that if Arsenal scored first then we have a chance. The moment we conceded and the manner in which we did that, I was only praying that we do not lose confidence and concede a dozen odd goals. The team recovered from the goal and put some pressure on the Chelsea team, but we just kept passing the ball outside of the Chelsea box and could not make any shot at goal which would trouble Cech. And when we did, Arshavin hit it straight at Cech. No point in saying that, if that that goal had gone in, things would have been different and the match would have finished differently. The fact of the matter is that, it didn’t and Chelsea took advantage again.
The second goal was an example of how not to defend. Vermaelen and Clichy both left Drogba alone and it was a bit late when Clichy realised that he was the one who should go behind Drogba as Vermaelen went left to protect the box. Drogba doesn’t mess up such golden opportunities, especially in big matches like this. He is a different animal when it comes to high-profile matches. He is one hell of a gifted player, with the skills and strength. Defensively we haven’t learnt our lessons from last week.
Till Bendtner came in we were not even winning headers and I seriously do not understand the purpose of crossing from any flank when you know that the Russian who was playing as the centre-forward will not even be able to out-jump the Terry’s and Carvalho’s of the world. He has his limitations. I wonder what Wenger is planning to do. And some of the crosses were atrocious. I mean here is a left back and a right back who have played for hundreds of matches at the top level in Europe and they can’t cross. Seeing Bentley make some telling crosses in the Spurs game, made me think if we should have retained him. I know he is not a full back , but he crosses from wherever he is.
So now we play Liverpool who seem to be on the ascendancy, having collected 17 points from 21 available in the last 7 matches. This should be an interesting match as we know that we need to win this to be clinging on to that 3rd spot. A Liverpool victory will bring them very close to us and I am sure Wenger would not like that happening.
Arsenal is 3rd best in the league…but we still love them February 2, 2010

All Gooners of the world must have had one of their worst Sunday nights ever, seeing old foes United thumping 3 goals and dominating the Gunners as if there was no tomorrow. We played very badly and United team showed the desire and hunger to win and take all the three points. No one showed that attitude more than Wayne Rooney, especially the way he ran from close to the United box till the Arsenal one and finished a first time shot placing it past Almunia.
Arsenal never looked like coming back and threatening the United goal that convincingly. Arshavin missed a host of chances to score as well as pass to his teammates who were in better position. Clichy has not yet got to the best of his fitness, which shows in the way he has been dominated by opposition players. Denilson is another played who has come in for a lot of criticism. With Song performing the way he has been doing this year I wonder if we are seeing the demise of the Brazilian. Goal keeping has been an outstanding problem for some time. Maybe Wenger needs to buy a good established keeper to replace Almunia. And where is the forward who is going to get us the goals in Van Persie’s absence? Bendtner does not seem to control the ball well, what do we expect from him other than getting back to complete fitness and winning the aerial challenges. But is he going to lead this team from the front? Then we need to get our eyes checked.
Next up is Chelsea and it definitely is not a easy match with the blues not having a lost for a long long time at Stamford Bridge. Even if we by luck win against Chelsea and Liverpool, we won’t become favourites to win the league. Lets admit it we are only the 3rd best team in this league and yes there is still some way to go. I am really scared of our challenge in Champions League now. We might beat our next opponents but what after that. Wenger has taken a big risk by fielding a weak team in the FA cup and not buying the January transfer window. It needs to be seen how things pan out for the rest of the season.

Chelsea might be carrying on with their Premier League matches in a professional manner, but Ancelloti knows deep inside that he cannot afford to slip up because Manchester United and Arsenal are running them close to top the league. And it is this this encounter today happening in North London which will be watched closely by everyone associated with Chelsea Football Club. Arsenal vs United any year will be a standout fixture for the quality of play and attacking football as it seldom is a boring match.
Ever since Chelsea came into prominence this fixture has become not-so important in the title deciding scheme of things. But this year both clubs have a chance to topple Chelsea from where it is perched right now. Alex Ferguson and Wenger seem to have mellowed down over the years and both would like to put it across the other.
Arsenal is without Vermaelen and United without Rio Ferdinand. Overall United look like the stronger side with a composed and sturdy side with a striker in prime form, in Rooney. Arsenal will hope that its creative midfield and the individual brilliance of players like Cesc and Arshavin will give it the edge. This should be an absorbing encounter, can’t miss it!!!

I know that 4 matches do not make a season, especially when it comes in January end, but the next 4 matches that Arsenal play in the Premier League will go a long way in making or breaking the confidence this team has. To me, as long as we do not lose any match or maybe lose just 1 match, we should be in a healthy position come February middle. Ideally I would not want to lose any of the next four matches or for that matter any more matches in the league.
The team seems to be recovering well in the health front with both Bendtner and Nasri getting into training. Probably this is the good news that awaits the team and will be the kick it needed to overcome Villa tonight. Last match we played in the league was probably one of the best matches we played in the whole season with Cesc showing that he can handle the physical part of the challenges. He played a key part in 2 goals and Rosicky showed why I rate him high in this team with a superb goal which hardly had any back lift.
I got a bit busy with a lot of things in life, both officially and personally. I got engagaged on Xmas eve and ya she loves the Gunners too

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Please rise for the one and only Arshavin…I do not care how the match was played till the first half and whenever Arsenal looked really pathetic in the match…but what a comeback by this team and what a finish from the Russian super star. For him Anfield is a good stage to shine after scoring four in the same fixture last year. His exquisite finish was the difference in the end.
The first half was so bad for Arsenal that Wenger had to give a piece of his mind to the whole team, shocking everyone from Cesc to Vermaelen. So we went away to a top four side and were one goal down at half time and came back the winner at the end of the match…so this should settle a lot of nerves. Having said that the biggest challenge this year would be to get 3 points out of the away fixtures at Villa Park, Craven Cottage, White Hart Lane etc. Which means that the Gunners should get all the three points in the next match at Burnley.

Tomorrow evening the draw for the greatest sports show in the world will be held. The winner takes about 31 million dollars with the teams beaten in the group stage taking home about 9 million dollars. The World Cup 2010 draw could surely group certain powerhouses as a couple of European star teams find themselves unseeded for this tournament, namely France and Portugal.
Pots for Friday’s draw: eight groups of four countries to be drawn, each group containing one country from each pot.
Pot 1 (seeds): South Africa, Brazil, Spain, Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Argentina, England
Pot 2 (Asia, Oceania and North/Central America): Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Australia, New Zealand, United States, Mexico, Honduras
Pot 3 (Africa and South America): Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, Algeria, Paraguay, Chile, Uruguay
Pot 4 (Europe): France, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland, Greece, Serbia, Denmark, Slovakia
For the last WC I did make my predictions and got it right with respect to the pre-quarterfinalists but after that got it wrong. So surely after the draw is made I will try my luck again and maybe you all can make your comments on that.
So till then….
Arsenal beaten fair and square November 30, 2009

Before the match against Chelsea, Wenger boldly challenged his team to come out all guns blazing and said this is the moment when the Gunners should stand and be counted as title contenders. Sadly, that moment came and the team was left demoralised with a 0-3 verdict at home, bringing to an end a glorious run of victories at home. We were beaten fair and square whatever Wenger says about the referee disallowing the goal etc. We hardly had any shots on goal which troubled Cech.
There are of-course talking points, the biggest from an Arsenal stand-point would be why Song was substituted at half time? Wenger could have easily replaced Walcott with Denilson who was looking a bit shaky. And Song was having a wonderful match till that point.
Secondly, Ashley Cole made those two telling crosses which led to the two goals. How I wish Clichy could improve on this aspect. Clichy for all his speed and skill, lacks in getting those crosses in the right areas. How many times have we seen crosses going over the goal or going miles above the goal mouth.
And even if the crosses come in, who in this Arsenal team can rise above towering defences and head the ball into the goal. We do not have a forward who can come in place of Bendtner.
It is time to concede that with the current team that we have we should look at finishing in the top 3. Maybe a cup or two at the end of the season would be a bonus and Wenger will buy in January.

Saw this very sentimental story on Alexander Song, Arsenal’s most improved player this season.
As part of Arsenal’s charity of the season, today’s game will raise money for the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity. Arsenal has pledged to contribite half a million pounds to the hospital to build a new ward and unit for lung diseases.
So may Arsenal win and close the gap against Chelsea today. Go Gunners!!!
A Standard entry into the knockout stage for Arsenal November 25, 2009

Arsenal got into the knockout stages of the Champions League for the tenth straight year with a 2-0 win against Standard Liege. There were injury problems though after the match with Gibbs being sidelined for close to 3 months with a fractured metatarsal and this after he came back from a minor injury to feature in this match. Gallas had a clash of head with Arshavin and was subed midway. Wenger though in his post match interview has said
Gallas has a slight ankle problem and a swollen eye. I think he will recover from the eye and the ankle soon.
Though he didn’t mention by when, I assume he meant before the weekend match. Gibbs he said was more serious.
Nasri capitalised on a defensive slip up and slotted in the first goal. He along with Fabregas controlled the midfield throughout the match. The second came from a Denilson long ranger. Playing in his 100th match, Denilson took his chance and drilled a wonderf ul shot from outside the penalty box high into the box.
Fabregas earned a unnecessary yellow card in the fag end of the match which resulted in the Standard player being sent off for a “headbutt”.
So now all set for the season-defining sunday thriller against Chelsea.
Arsene on Henry handball November 20, 2009

Thanks to Arsenal TV subscription, I got to see what Wenger had to say about the most controversial football incident in recent past – the Henry Handball – that sent the French to South Africa and the Irish to despair.
Wenger didn’t blame Henry, but he did have a couple of things to say about use of video technology being used in cases like this. He did say that the ref should have sensed something when Henry did not celebrate spontaneously or when 11 Irish players confronted him!!! And the ref did not have video technology which he could have used in such situations to help him take a informed decision. Ok maybe video technology might not be helpful in all cases but in such obvious cases,it will only help. Valid point professor.
Sportscentre in ESPN with their various animation software points out that the linesman should have had a clear vision but still didn’t help in this case. Lets hope that the best thing that can possibly happen is introduction of video technology for such situations.
Regarding the weekend match, Wenger did confirm that Gibbs will be ready but will play only in the mid-week Champions League match. And when asked would it be Traore or Silvestre at left back, he did mention that there is another player who can play in that position without mentioning the name. Who could that be? Eboue?
Fabianski and Denilson are available for the Sunderland match and Denilson will start. Strange that Wenger still doesn’t have information from Russia on Arshavin. Not that he is injured or anything but I hope Arshavin is fully fit and active because against teams like Sunderland, who seems to be in some good form, we need some creativity and goals.
